|Offshore Wind Week 2017|
Offshore wind is an essential part of the UK’s current energy mix and a vital force for powering its future economy. It generates 5% of UK electricity, enough to power over 4 million homes, and is expected to generate 10% by 2020. By 2030, it has the potential to supply over a third of the UK’s power needs. As the largest offshore wind market globally, the UK attracts large amounts of investment which enables a growing domestic supply chain and ensures that the UK reaps the benefits of successful developments in the sector.
Offshore Wind Week 2017 takes place in the wake of the recent results of the Contracts for Difference auction which saw three offshore wind farms awarded with contracts to produce a capacity of 3.2GW by 2023, enough to power more than 3.3 million homes. These contracts reveal how the costs of offshore wind has plummeted with strike prices being awarded now as low as £57.50 per megawatt hour, nearly 50% lower than prices at the last auction in 2015. These results are clear proof that innovation in the offshore wind industry translates into economic growth for the UK on an industrial scale, bringing new investment, jobs and clean growth at record levels.
To continue developing into the next decade and beyond, offshore wind needs continuous support from Government and Parliament. To deepen policymakers’ understanding of, and support for, this ambitious industry, RenewableUK and partner companies are delivering Offshore Wind Week 2017. This week will run from the 6th to the 10th of November and includes a diverse programme of events which will celebrate the growth of the industry and its potential to power the UK’s future economy by providing clean energy, employment and continued local growth to all regions.
