RenewableUK says today’s announcement by The Crown Estate of the launch of the fourth major round of offshore wind development will bring billions of pounds in investment to the UK and create thousands of new jobs.
The Crown Estate, which leases the seabed to offshore wind developers, has unveiled Round 4 Offshore Wind, identifying new areas of UK waters where projects can be built in the decades ahead. The announcement follows two years of careful studies of the seabed and consultations with other maritime users and environmental experts.
This round will make leases available for companies to develop at least 7 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity mainly in the 2030s. The UK’s current capacity of 8.5GW of offshore wind provides over 8% of the UK’s annual electricity needs, and the projects already underway will raise our operational capacity to at least 30GW by 2030, generating at least one-third of the UK’s power.
RenewableUK estimates that an additional 7GW of new offshore wind would bring £20.8bn in investment in today’s prices and support over 9,000 full-time jobs.
The new 7GW of future projects will maintain the UK’s position as the leading global market for offshore wind with a pipeline of projects either operational, under construction or planned amounting to over 43GW – significantly ahead of our nearest rivals Germany (16.5GW), the USA (15.7GW) and China (12GW).
RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Hugh McNeal said: “It’s great to see the UK stepping up its ambition with a new round of offshore wind development now underway. This will engender further momentum in our world-leading offshore wind sector, securing billions of pounds in investment in new infrastructure.
“These powerhouses of the future will create thousands of highly-skilled jobs, continuing the rapid regeneration of our coastal communities, as well as benefitting our UK-wide supply chain. The healthy pipeline of projects to come will also make a significant contribution to the UK reaching net zero emissions as fast and as cheaply as possible”.
