The winners of this year’s RenewableUK Health and Safety Awards have been announced at the trade association’s International Health and Safety conference in Glasgow. The awards highlight outstanding examples of the development, implementation and sharing of best practice in health and safety across the renewable energy sector as well as recognising individuals whose long-term contribution has made a substantive and positive difference.

Statoil won the RenewableUK Health & Safety Innovation Award 2018 for its use of drones to inspect wind turbines at Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm off the coast of Norfolk. Using drones is a safer and more cost-effective way of carrying out work which was previously carried out by rope access. The award was presented to Tove Lunde, Head of Safety, Security and Sustainability, New Energy Solutions at Statoil.

David Griffiths, the Head of Environment Health and Safety at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, won the Jerry Carnell Special Commendation Health & Safety Award 2018. He has worked on health and safety issues for decades, ever since the inception of the wind industry.  As one of the first Environmental, Health and Safety officers employed within the new industry, David was instrumental in ensuring that the industry started life on a strong safety footing, and has been a driving force ever since.

Speaking at the event, RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Hugh McNeal said: “As our industry expands, as we enter the mainstream, the importance of us all demonstrating leadership in health and safety grows, not only in our own organisations but across all of our supply chains and partners. We need to work collaboratively, recognising how others can help us, if we are to be successful in driving improved health and safety outcomes in our increasingly global industry”.
