RenewableUK is highlighting the new record level of public support for onshore wind –  as well as the massive level of support for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, and renewables overall - in the latest Government opinion poll on energy and climate change.

The Public Attitudes Tracker, published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, shows that a record 74% of people support the development of onshore wind – up from the previous record of 73% when polling for this technology last took place in May.

Public support for wave and tidal energy stands at 79% - and for renewable energy overall it’s at 82% - both equalling previous records. Offshore wind also remains very high at 79%.

RenewableUK’s Executive Director Emma Pinchbeck said: “Onshore wind is the cheapest way to generate power and there is clear public support for this technology, which can keep consumer bills low. In many parts of the UK, new wind farms that have public support are currently blocked from competing in the market. Recently the devolved Governments in Wales and Scotland, the National Infrastructure Commission and the CBI have called for onshore to wind to be allowed to compete and it’s clear that the public agree.

The popularity of offshore wind and marine renewables remain sky high as they are breathing new life into coastal communities and building vibrant supply chains up and down the country. An overwhelming 82% of people support developing all types of renewable energy – so when it comes to reaching out to voters, renewable energy is an issue that matters”.
