New report shows onshore wind offers best value for consumers

RenewableUK is highlighting a new report by independent business analysts Baringa which has found that onshore wind is cheaper than any other clean source of new power.

The study, commissioned by Scottish Renewables, shows that if new onshore wind projects were allowed to compete in auctions to win contracts to generate electricity, they would provide a net financial benefit to consumers. After an initial period of financial support, they pay back more overall to consumers during their lifetime.

RenewableUK’s Executive Director Emma Pinchbeck said:

“When it comes to keeping the lights on at the lowest possible cost to consumers, onshore wind is absolutely crucial. The Government’s upcoming Industrial Strategy is rightly concerned with energy costs, so it makes no sense to deny future projects a chance to compete in auctions for contracts to generate electricity.

“Bill payers deserve the best possible value for money. This report shows that if onshore wind was allowed to take part in the competitive auction process, it would prove yet again that it can provide power for British homes, businesses and factories cheaper than any other low-carbon technology”.

“A study published earlier this month by the Conservative think tank Bright Blue shows that most Conservative voters support the development of onshore wind farms, provided they receive no subsidies. The Baringa report shows that new onshore wind projects pay back more overall to consumers over the lifetime of a project”.
