RenewableUK comment on local electricity bill discounts for communities hosting new grid infrastructure
8 August 2025 - RenewableUK press release
Commenting on the Government's announcement of a consultation on local electricity bill discounts for British households living near new grid infrastructure of £250 a year for ten years, RenewableUK’s Director of Future Electricity Systems Barnaby Wharton said:
“Upgrading our grid is essential to manage the increasing power demands of the twenty-first century and support an electrified economy, with growing demand from electric vehicles, data centres and home heating all over the country.
"The importance of engaging closely with local communities as we build this infrastructure is well recognised by the renewable energy industry and the Government. We need to ensure that communities' voices are listened to and that they benefit directly from hosting new grid infrastructure, including through local electricity bill discounts. But it isn't just local communities which will benefit - the regulator Ofgem says a grid based on clean power would deliver £10 billion of savings for all consumers by 2050.”
