Reforming the grid connection queue will enable clean energy projects to go ahead faster
8 December 2025 - RenewableUK press release
Commenting on the announcement by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) of a reformed queue of projects for grid connections, RenewableUK's Head of Flexibility and Grid Barnaby Wharton said:
"Reform of the queue for grid connections has been necessary to ensure that renewable energy projects which are ready to connect are prioritised, and that zombie projects are weeded out. This is vital to speed up the decarbonisation of the UK’s power system, which will stabilise our electricity bills.
“It's taken a lot of hard work by NESO and the industry to get to this point. As with any major change, there are some developers who will be disappointed by the outcome, while others will welcome the clarity that today's announcement brings.
"While it is important that the connections queue is reformed, we also need to ensure that we do not unnecessarily stifle future clean energy project development. We will continue to work with industry and NESO to ensure that projects which change their plans and can’t progress are removed and, importantly, allow new viable projects which could help lower bills and manage our electricity system to enter the queue."
