New British wind energy record set as gas generation falls to two-year low
26 March 2026 - RenewableUK press release
Commenting on the British wind energy generation record announced today by the National Energy System Operator (NESO), which confirmed a new high of 23,880 megawatts on Wednesday 25 March, beating the previous record of 23,825MW set on 5 December, RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Tara Singh said:
“It’s great to see a new British record, with enough power generated for 23 million homes, at a time when strengthening our homegrown energy security is uppermost in people’s minds due to global instability.
“Wind provided more than half of Britain’s electricity during this record period, and it’s highly significant that earlier in the day low-cost wind and solar squeezed expensive gas off our energy system - with gas falling to its lowest level of generation for nearly two years, providing just 2.3% of our electricity. That’s what the energy transition looks like in practice, and it shows why we need to continue to build out an ambitious pipeline of new clean energy projects now and in the years ahead”.
