Marine Recovery Fund will enhance protection of biodiversity

Commenting on today’s announcement by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) of the launch of a Marine Recovery Fund, to enable more widespread measures to be taken to protect biodiversity, RenewableUK’s Head of Offshore Wind Celestia Godbehere said:


“As responsible developers, the offshore wind industry has been working closely with our colleagues at Defra and nature conservation organisations for many years to establish this groundbreaking fund, paid for by offshore wind farm developers, and we’re very pleased to see this milestone achieved.


“The Marine Recovery Fund will enhance the protection of wildlife in our seas by enabling more co-ordinated measures to be taken over much wider areas of seabed, across multiple offshore wind projects being developed by different companies. The offshore wind industry already compensates for impacts on the marine environment as new projects are built, but the MRF opens up opportunities for conservation efforts which can only be delivered with Government leadership, and supports the strategic delivery of large-scale options such as seabird predator management which have previously been challenging to arrange on a project-by-project basis, producing even better environmental outcomes. This system will also provide greater certainty and clarity for wind farm developers as we plan, build and operate projects generating clean power in harmony with our rich marine biodiversity."
