Energy Secretary is right to highlight Climate Change Committee report on how to cut bills

18 July 2024 - RenewableUK press release

Commenting on today’s statement on energy policy in the House of Commons by the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, RenewableUK’s Executive Director of Policy Ana Musat said:

Today’s CCC progress report to Parliament could not be clearer: maintaining the status quo is not an option for the UK. The Energy Secretary Ed Miliband was right to flag it up in his speech, highlighting its conclusion that British-based renewable energy is the cheapest and fastest way to reduce vulnerability to volatile global fossil fuel markets, so the faster we get off fossil fuels the more secure we become.  Our annual offshore wind development needs to treble in the coming years and onshore wind needs to double. Homegrown renewables are the best and quickest way to ensure our businesses have access to cheap electricity, bolstering their competitiveness.

"The CCC report also made it clear that we need to get on with the decarbonisation of industry, heat and transport, all of which will require plentiful and affordable electricity supply, reinforcing the need for speedy deployment of the key renewable technologies. That’s why we’re pleased to see the new Government hit the ground running with new reforms to the planning system in their first few days, as well as lifting the de-facto ban on onshore wind in England. These are very positive measures which will build trust with industry and investors, reinforcing the fact that the UK is a leader in renewables deployment and a top investment destination".
