RenewableUK collaborates with aviation authorities and government to find solutions to radar interference or flight obstruction caused by wind energy developments.
More than half of wind farm developments are subject to objections from the aviation sector, and are treated comparably to other tall structures such as high-rise buildings, transmitter masts and chimneys. Wind turbines turn to produce energy, which under certain conditions can cause the complication of appearing on radar systems.
The Aviation Management Board chaired by the Department for Business, Energy, Industry and Skills includes representatives from RenewableUK, and meets regularly to address wider issues.
The Aviation Working Group is one of RenewableUK's closed working groups, accessible to appointed signed-in members only.
Aquila’s MOD ATC Windfarm Mitigation Guide
Aquila Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) is responsible through Project Marshall for the delivery and maintenance of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) ATMS Capability. Through our work with the BEIS led Aviation Management Board, Aquila have given RenewableUK permission to publish on our members’ area their trifold information leaflet to help members understand their windfarm mitigation services that are available for MOD ATC.
RenewableUK recommends that aviation stakeholders are always consulted early in the wind farm planning application process. Key stakeholders include:
- National Air Traffic Services (NATS) produce a series of free maps and offer a number of paid for services.
- Ministry of Defence (MOD) Safeguarding Team manage their consultations and provide pre-application advice.
- Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has a useful website, and are able to advise on general principles.
