Why treating all peatlands as ‘irreplaceable’ risks Welsh climate and nature ambitions

Current Welsh planning policy treats all peatland as uniformly “irreplaceable” — a position that doesn’t reflect the full spectrum of peatland condition or the latest ecological science. As a result, renewable energy projects are being blocked and Welsh peatland restoration goals are being put at risk.


A consortium of Wales’ leading peatland and ecology specialists have produced the following position paper - the most up-to-date collective assessment of peatland condition, restoration potential, and how well-designed renewable projects can support, not hinder, nature recovery.
