BWEA Health & Safety 09

BWEA aims to ensure that Health & Safety is a top priority in the industry and that best practice is adopted to ensure the good reputation of renewable generation is maintained.

Despite blizzards, gales and the deadline of Round 3 offshore bids, nearly 300 delegates attended or 5th Annual Health & Safety Conference in Brighton. Thanks to all our sponsors, in particular our core sponsor, The SeaRoc Group. Due to the support of all sponsors we were again able to make attendance free to all members.

We had an extremely diverse programme of presentations that demonstrated an industry that was engaged, proactive and dedicated to making this industry safe. Our key note addresses form BWEA Chief Executive Maria McCaffery and Capt Peter Hodgetts from The SeaRoc Group both emphasised the continuing need to keep health and safety as the top priority in the wind, wave and tidal industry.

Key sessions of the day covered Legal & Policy Update, Offshore Wind Activities, Safety in the Workplace and Incident Reporting and Search, Rescue, Emergency & Access. Although every presentation gave an excellent update or insight into the specific topic, some common themes were apparent across the day. These included the :

  • continued need to identify [risk assess] and address material risks;
  • importance of recognising and applying relevant guidance;
  • need to adopt a proportionate response to risks identified;
  • vital role of leadership and involvement of senior management;
  • importance of greater worker involvement; and
  • critical importance of have a second line of defence to manage emergencies.

In bringing all of these themes together we heard within several presentations how future health and safety risk management within the industry will require ever higher standards of co-operation, co-ordination and communication.

Thank you to everyone who attended the conference and who made the effort to make this year's conference the most successful to date. However we are not complacent. If there is any way we can improve then please get in contact with us at BWEA. Give feedback - if you attended the event, we would value your opinion of how we could further improve our events. We would also value your input to a few questions on Health & Safety.

Pre-conference networking reception

A networking reception was held on the evening before conference, to give delegates more time to network, an invaluable part of BWEA's events programme. BWEA would like to thank E.ON Climate & Renewables UK for sponsoring the reception.

The principal speaker at the reception was Dr. Tim Marsh BSc MSc PhD C. Psychol, FIOSH, Managing Director of Ryder Marsh.
