Micro and Small Wind Certification

Turbines with a swept area up to 200m2, (notionally up to 50kW)

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the independent, internationally recognised scheme supported by BEIS, the industry and a number of non-governmental groups in the UK. It provides greater protection for consumers by assessing and certifying microgeneration products and installers against robust and consistent criteria.

The MCS 006 (issue 2.1) of January 2014 , is their source document – it ‘…identifies the evaluation and assessment requirements and practices for the purposes of certification and listing of Small Wind Turbines.’

And it indicates that ‘…This scheme provides ongoing independent, third party assessment and approval of companies who wish to demonstrate that their small wind turbines with rated electrical power outputs up to 50 kW (measured at a wind speed of 11.0 m/s) and:

a) with a rotor swept area smaller than or equal to 200m2 meet and continue to meet the requirements of the RenewableUK Small Wind Turbine Standard (15 January 2014 )1; or,

b) meet and continue to meet the requirements of the most recent edition of IEC 61400-1 Wind Turbines – Design Requirements and selected requirements of the RenewableUK Small Wind Turbine Standard (15 January 2014). ‘

The MCS (and RenewableUK) standards can be found at: http://www.microgenerationcertification.org/mcs-standards/product-standards/small-and-micro-wind-turbines

Small Wind Turbines that have been certified in accordance with the MCS Standard and following their processes are registered on their website: http://www.microgenerationcertification.org/consumers/product-search?product_type_id=6776

Medium Wind Certification

Turbines with a swept area from 200m2 to 1,000m2, (notionally 50 – 500kW)

RenewableUK convened an international working group, formed of testing and certification bodies and manufacturers, to establish a medium wind turbine certification guideline. The group developed UK guidelines for Medium Wind Turbines, and it now sits with the MCS to aid their development of Medium Wind Turbines within the Certification Scheme (and contribution to the revision of the international wind turbine IEC61400-1 standard to include content on medium wind turbines).
