The continued success of wind and marine energy is dependent on attracting skilled workers.

There were around 18,500 people directly employed in these industries in 2013 (74% increase since 2010) - a further 70,000 direct and indirect jobs could be created by 2023, representing a huge opportunity for the industry and UK economy.

We take a lead on a range of skills initiatives with input and guidance from our Skills & Employment Strategy Group (SESG). The SESG represents the industry to provides leadership in addressing skills gaps to ensure that a pool of skilled and experienced recruits will be available to meet the sector’s current and future employment needs.

RenewableUK has worked with SESG on;

  • Renewable Energy Careers & STEM Guidance & Apprenticeship Programme Accords, the UK’s first Sector Skills Accords
  • Labour market research, incl. Working for a Green Britain & Northern Ireland, and State of the Industry reports
  • Skills Manifesto - skills policy recommendations from the wind & marine energy industries
  • Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship - UK’s first apprenticeship for renewables
  • Engaging with Higher Education and Professional Institutions to strengthen link between course provision & skills gaps
  • Outreach via careers resources, engagement with education sector, conferences, and external events
  • Facilitating a network for human resources professionals in the sector via benchmarking opportunities through a Renewables Sector Salary Survey and shared learning and networking opportunities at regular events
  • Providing the means for a collaborative and concerted ‘voice’ for the industry on skills and employment issues
