Commenting on the publication of the Conservative Party Manifesto, RenewableUK’s Chief Executive, Hugh McNeal, said:

“Renewables can offer much to the next Government: these modern, game-changing technologies have resolved the decades-old problem of delivering an affordable, secure supply of low-carbon electricity. It’s good to see the Conservative manifesto focussing on energy policy outcomes like these. Our industries can help a future Conservative government to deliver these and more.

“The technologies we represent make an important contribution to UK industry. The sector is highly innovative; onshore wind is now the cheapest source of new power, and offshore wind has reduced its costs by over a third in the last four years. Because of this record-breaking cost reduction, we would also expect renewable energy to come out well from any independent costs review.

“The Conservative Manifesto highlights the UK’s position as a global leader in offshore wind, and its achievement in becoming a mainstream power source, investing millions in places such as Hull and Grimsby. This regional investment is a hallmark of the renewables sector, with wave and tidal technology, renowned for its world-class innovation, revitalising coastal communities, and the renewables supply chain extending around the country, generating opportunities right across the UK.

“We’ve long made the case for remote Scottish Islands onshore wind projects so we’re especially pleased to see the Conservative and Unionist Party supporting the development of these projects. This is a good example of the right development in the right place: onshore wind going forward in parts of the UK where it is wanted and welcomed.

“We know renewables are a vote winner, strongly supported by the public along with action on climate change. The Conservative Manifesto gives scope to recognise that renewables are also the best choice for consumers, offering affordable energy that can be the backbone of the economy”.
