RenewableUK has marked its 37th Annual Conference by celebrating its 2nd awards ceremony at a Gala Dinner in Liverpool attended by over 250 industry professionals.

The awards honoured achievements in 3 categories:

  • Apprentice of the Year
  • Excellence
  • Breakthrough

The Apprentice of the Year was awarded to Michael Leach from Treherbert in South Wales, whose firm belief in the need for clean energy prompted a change of career direction and led him into the renewables industry. He completed an apprenticeship scheme run by ISO Fab and Vattenfall, working in Kent at Thanet Offshore wind farm and at onshore wind projects in Wales. He is now looking forward to working as a maintenance technician in South Wales for ISO Fab. His managers were impressed by his determination and drive, citing his willingness to “go the extra mile”, making him an exemplary role model for prospective young recruits to the renewables industry.

The Excellence Award was presented to Alison Hood, former Head of Communications at Airvolution Energy, for her work in crowdfunding the ‘Fact Check the Energy Bill’ campaign. The successful campaign, which received £15,000 of pledges in one month, means that the independent charity Full Fact will scrutinise the Government’s Energy Bill, providing important clarity and detail to the future debate surrounding the legislation. Alison is a tireless champion of renewables, brimming with fresh ideas and boundless energy, combined with a deep knowledge of the sector and an acute strategic awareness of how to get things done.

The Breakthrough Award was presented to the 3sun Group based in Great Yarmouth for its innovative Certificate Management System which ensures compliance with regulations for the inspection of 60% of the UK’s offshore wind turbines. The judges recognised that this important development has reduced downtime and was a great example of bringing in good practice from other industries, in order to help improve performance and enable cost reduction.

RenewableUK’s Director of Events, Marketing and Membership, Garth Halliday, commented on the awards:

"Tonight’s ceremony was about recognising some of the hard work and innovation which often takes place under the radar within the renewable energy industry. We had an extraordinary array of accomplished nominees for this year’s awards ceremony, which demonstrates that the industry remains the go-to destination for dynamic innovators at every level. This shows that the wind and marine sectors continue to attract the best and the brightest talent from across the UK."
